Wedding Rescue

People often ask what a wedding planner actually does.

Most of the time the answer is simple: organization, timelines, vendor coordination, and making sure a couple’s wedding day unfolds exactly as they imagined. But every once in a while, something happens that reminds you why experience matters.

I was working with a couple whose wedding was just two weeks away when we received a call that no planner — and no couple — ever wants to get. My bride was sobbing and sure her wedding would not happen. The venue had closed. Not just the ballroom. The entire property. The catering, the guest accommodations, and the ceremony location were suddenly gone. The officiant was in the hospital and the hair and make up team had taken on a bigger wedding for that day.

In a single moment, months of planning had disappeared. For most couples, that kind of news would feel impossible to recover from. But weddings have a way of reminding us that what truly matters is not the building, the décor, or even the timeline. What matters is the people who care enough to help put the pieces back together.

Within forty-eight hours I had rebuilt the wedding from the ground up. I began reaching out to my network, first calling a friend who I knew was the sales director of a new Kimpton hotel- not even open yet. It was a perfect spot for this wedding and it was the first wedding there. We had a venue, catering, accommodations AND a happy couple.

I also had the issue of an officiant that was rushed to the hospital and a make up and hair team that had decided to take on a bigger wedding for that day. Again, back to my network and soon I had a new wedding, same date- and, still a happy couple. The timeline was recreated. Details were adjusted. Two weeks later, the couple walked down the aisle surrounded by their family and friends, and most guests never knew how close the celebration had come to disappearing entirely.

This is the part of wedding planning that couples rarely see. Behind every calm wedding day is someone quietly solving problems, coordinating people, and making sure the unexpected never reaches the couple or their guests. When everything works perfectly, it feels effortless. But often, that sense of ease exists because someone has spent months, and in this case days, making sure it does. And that is why couples often choose to have someone experienced standing beside them throughout the process.

Not just to plan a wedding. But to make sure the day they’ve dreamed about actually happens.
