A luxury wedding planner shares expert, friendly advice for buying THE DRESS
There’s a reason finding THE DRESS feels so significant. It’s not just a gown—it’s the piece that carries you through some of the most photographed, most felt moments of the day. And while the experience should be beautiful, it should also be smart: aligned with your wedding, your timeline, and your comfort.
After many years of managing bridal salons, here’s the guidance I share with my clients to make the decision feel effortless—and regret-proof.
Begin with the wedding you’re actually hosting. Before you fall in love with a silhouette, anchor your choice in the setting:
- Season + climate (heat, humidity, wind, chill)
- Venue + surfaces (stairs, grass, sand, cobblestone, tight aisles)
- Your schedule (travel, outfit changes, extended photo time, late-night dancing)
Luxury is ease. The right dress supports your day, not the other way around.
Set a true budget (the gown is only the beginning) A dress budget should include the full look, not just the tag:
- Alterations (nearly always needed)
- Bustle (for most trains)
- Foundation pieces (cups, shapewear, specialty bras)
- Accessories (veil, shoes, jewelry, hair pieces)
- Steaming + cleaning/preservation (often overlooked)

Shop early—then protect your decision. The most common stress I see is a rushed timeline. Give yourself room for ordering and tailoring, then once you’ve chosen, stop scrolling. Comparison is the quickest way to dilute a great decision.
Make comfort non-negotiable
Your gown should feel as good at hour six as it does at minute one. In the fitting room:
- Sit fully
- Walk quickly
- Lift your arms (hug test)
- Take a few dance steps
- Breathe deeply
If it’s restrictive now, it won’t feel better after ceremony nerves, champagne, and a full evening of movement.
Bring a small, supportive circle. The best appointments are calm and focused. I recommend 1–3 people who understand your style and keep the energy light. Too many opinions can turn a special moment into a committee meeting. Make it a special outing- dress up, wear make up and do your hair, wear proper undergarments and go to lunch afterward- especially if you have said YES! These tips will help you stay focused, ease your decision and make you feel like The Bride.
Ignore the number on the label. Bridal sizing is famously inconsistent. The only thing that matters is how the dress will be tailored to you. Don’t let a tag steal your joy.
Before you commit, ask
- Do I love it from the front, side, and back?
- Can I move, sit, and breathe comfortably?
- Does it suit my venue + season?
- Does it fit my total budget, including alterations?
- Would I still love it if I stopped looking today?
If you answer YES, trust yourself.
A seamless dress experience includes:
- Alterations scheduled with breathing room
- Shoes chosen early (hem length depends on them)
- Bustle practice (and assigning someone to help)
- A wedding-week plan for transport + steaming
Planner note: Add dress logistics to your timeline- when you’ll get into it on the day.
Final thought: THE DRESS should feel like you—elevated, comfortable, and completely aligned with the celebration you’re creating.
